Islamabad: Twin-cities Rawalpindi and Islamabad private hospitals were fleecing the patients with both the hands as concerned authority was not paying any heed towards the problems.
Currently Federal Capital has two main hospitals including PIMS and Poly Clinic and nearly two million population of both the cities depend on these hospitals for medical treatment.
Hospitals were trying their best to provide best medical facilities to poor patients but owing to the overburden they failed to manage such number of patients.
Lack of facilities in these hospitals and overburden compelled the patients to visit cities private hospitals. Sources said that private hospitals were fleecing the poor patients under the cover of laboratories room, visit and nursing charges. They were charging more then rupees fifty thousand from a single patient of 24 hour duration.
Sources disclosed that most of the doctors who were working in government hospitals and they have also their own separate clinics and they forced the patients come to their private hospitals and clinics.
On the other hand ministry of health and Pakistan Medicinal Dental Council (PMDC) has failed to control this negative practice.
Senate Standing committee on cabinet secretariat had also took notice of this situation and formally summoned the officials of health ministry, PMDC and district administration but they hadn’t take any action against the private hospitals.
Sources said that these private hospitals have been selling medicines at retail prices, but when patients are discharged they include 10pc miscellaneous charges in the bill, due to which prices are increased.
There is no law that restricts hospitals from billing for miscellaneous charges, due to which the ICT administration cannot take action against hospitals, only pharmacies and medical stores. Moreover, teaching hospitals do not provide 50pc free beds to patients, despite a number of claims made by PMDC that it has ensured that all teaching hospitals provide free beds.
