Oslo: stressing the need for a peaceful settlement of Kashmir dispute, the Norwegian Parliament after holding a threadbare discussion on the prevailing political and human rights situation in Indian held territory of Jammu and Kashmir has urged the governments of India and Pakistan to initiate a dialogue process to settle the long running dispute amicably.
Pertinently, the emphasis was made during a debate in the Norwegian Parliament on an Adjournment Motion tabled by the leader of the Christian Democratic Party Knut Arild Hareide here on Wednesday. Arild Hareide lamented the gross human rights violations by India in occupied Kashmir. He expressed his concern and showed surprise on how a democracy like India could impose curbs on freedom of expression including the social media.
Norwegian Foreign Minister, Borge Brende, while replying to the Motion, also reiterated the need for a peaceful settlement of the dispute. Various other members of the Norwegian Parliament also spoke on the matter and supported the Kashmiris’ inalienable right, the right to self-determination guaranteed to them by no less an authority than the United Nations.
