Srinagar: Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over observed the Right to Self-determination Day, today, to remind the world community that the UN resolutions on Kashmir remain unimplemented even after the passage of more than six decades.
According to KMS, on this day in 1949, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution, acknowledging the Kashmiris’ right of self-determination.
The occupation authorities had put Hurriyat leaders including Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Aasiya Andrabi, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Mukhtar Ahmed Waza, Ghulam Ahmed ,Gulzar, Bilal Siddiqui, Syed Imtiyaz Haider, Muhammad Yasin Attai and Molvi Bashir Irfani under house arrest or in custody to prevent them from carrying out activities in connection with the Right to Self-Determination Day.
The detention of leaders is also aimed at preventing the leaders from participating in a rally announced by the Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Gilani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik in Sopore, tomorrow. The resistance leaders have called for complete shutdown in Sopore, tomorrow, on the completion of 25 years to a deadly massacre by Indian troops in the town. Over 60 civilians were martyred and more than 350 structures including residential houses and shops were gutted when the
Indian troops set the town ablaze on 6th January in 1993.
The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Gilani, in a statement in Srinagar said that India could not deny the legitimacy and authenticity of the UN resolutions that formed basics of the Kashmir dispute and guaranteed its peaceful settlement as per the Kashmiris’ aspirations. Senior APHC leader, Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi Al-Safvi, addressing a gathering in Badgam and Hurriyat leaders, Ghulam Muhammad Khan Sopori, Hilal Ahmed War, Javaid Ahmed Mir, Zafar Akbar Butt, Firdous Ahmed Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League in their statements deplored that the UN had failed to implement its resolutions on Kashmir
despite the passing of several decades.
Meanwhile, people staged forceful demonstrations in Pulwama and Shopian areas after the Indian troops launched cordon and search operations. The troops used brute force to disperse the protesters. Residents of Pampore offered funeral prayers in absentia for the youth who were recently martyred by Indian troops in Lethpora area of Pulwama. They also raised pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.
