Karachi: Surgeon General Pak Army calls for ban on over the counter sale of antibiotics to ensure patient safety. He was addressing to the 2nd International Conference on Patient Safety 2017, organized by Riphah Institute of Healthcare Improvement & Safety (RIHIS), hosted by Agha Khan University Hospital, Karachi. The theme of the conference was “value based safe health care”. It adopted Karachi declaration calling for giving high priority to the “Patient Safety” as per constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan and International health & Patient safety standards.
Lt. Gen. Zahid Hamid, Surgeon General Pakistan Army also said that Pakistan Army is signing MOU with Punjab Health care Commission to improve the facilities in the hospitals. He also emphasized that Health care Commission must be made effective in other provinces too.
The Conference was inaugurated by the Federal Secretary, Ministry of National Health Services Mr. Naveed Kamran Baloch. He said that Federal Government will help provinces in improving the health facilities. After autonomy, the provinces have to play their role in improvement of health facilities. He further added that Federal institutions, Drug Regulatory authority and Pakistan Nursing Council are helping in providing better health facilities.
Addressing to the conference ex-Director World Health Organization Dr. Najeeb Al Shorbaji said that World Health Organization is ready to cooperate in preparing Patient Safety Program with Pakistan. He said that Pakistan has to improve the standards of Patient Safety. He further emphasized to distribute the literature of World Health Organization about Patient Safety among the doctors and para-medical staff in Pakistan.
President of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) Prof. Dr. Shabir Ahmed Lehri said without provision of quality medical education, patient safety and safeguarding the interests of the patients could not be ensured and in this regard, PMDC was taking every possible measure to ensure that quality of health education improves in the country.
The two day conference held various sessions which were addressed by keynote speakers from different countries across the world; they said on the occasion that lack of Patient Safety is a major cause of death across the world. Patient Safety act must be passed by the Parliament in Pakistan. They further added that errors of doctors and nurses and use of wrong drugs are unforgettable.
Earlier, Chancellor Riphah International University Mr. Hassan Muhammad Khan welcomed the participants of the conference and hoped the conference will help in developing a learning network of health care professionals on patient safety and quality of healthcare. He said Riphah intends to closely align its health professions curriculum, both at graduate and postgraduate levels, with patient safety as one of the key objectives.
The Chairman of the ICPS and Project Director of RIHIS, Dr. Zakiuddin Ahmed highlighted the importance of patient safety in Pakistan which he was talking about since 2005, he said, today Alhamdulillah, hundreds of doctors and experts are attending this conference, which is heartening”, Dr. Zakiddun Ahmed added.
Prof. Dr. Anis Ahmad, Vice Chancellor Riphah International University Islamabad, Prof. Dr. Mati-ur-Rehman Principal and Director RIHIS . Rear Admiral Najmus Saqib Khan, Director General Medical Services of Pakistan Navy, CEO of the AKUH Johannes Theodorus Kedzierski, Dr. Najeeb Al Shorbaji from World Health Organization, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) Dr. Muhammad Aslam and others also spoke on the occasion.
The international conference was attended by the national and international experts from United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Canada and many other parts of the world as well as heads and chiefs of various regulatory bodies, government functionaries, medical directors of country’s leading hospitals, pharmaceutical sector representatives, academicians, doctors, paramedics.
