Muzaffarabad: (Parliament Times) The Prime Minister Azad Jammu and Kashmir Raja Farooq Haider Khan has said that government is committed to hold local bodies’ election in Azad Kashmir to transfer the powers at gross root level. Presiding over a review meeting of local bodies’ institutions in Muzaffarabad today, he said prime objective of the local bodies’ elections is to directly involve the people in decision making process. AJK Prime Minister directed Local Government Department to take immediate administrative measures for the smooth conduct of the election.
The meeting was briefed by Secretary Local Government and Rural Development about the fresh delimitations and other administrative affairs. The meeting also approved proposals for amendments in the Local Government Act while Prime Minister issued directives for removal of all hurdles to hold local bodies elections at the earliest. Speaking on the Prime Minister said holding bodies elections is one of the most important priorities of his government. Terming the local bodies as heart of the democracy he said his government is serious to dissolve the powers down to gross root level by functionalize the local bodies institutions. He said that local bodies elections would be held at all cost. The meeting was attended by Principal Secretary Ehsan Khalid Kiani, Secretary Local Government Mahmoodul Hassan Raja, Director General Local Government Sardar Nusrat Aziz and other officials.
Meanwhile AJK Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider Khan has approved the creation of a research and policy forum to promote the Kashmir issue. The seven-member committee would be led by the former chairman of the International Relations Department at National Defense University Brigadier (retired) Dr Muhammad Khan. AJK Liberation Cell secretary would be the vice chairman of the committee, officials said. Other members of the committee would include AJK government secretary Muhammad Idrees Abbassi, AJK University assistant professors Dr Sumaira Shafique, Syed Mazhar Ghardezi, former director of Allama Iqbal Open University Qasim Haider and the AJK Liberation Cell Director Raja Sajjad Khan. The forum would have multidimensional responsibilities to promote the Kashmir issue in its true perspective at various levels including research on the dispute, upgrading the Kashmir Today magazine, highlighting the Kashmir issue on national and international forums.
